Frequently Asked Questions
No statewide license is required, but private process servers in Arkansas must be appointed by a court under AR R. Civ. P. 4(c)(2) and Supreme Court Administrative Order No. 20. Appointment requires being a U.S. citizen with no felony or dishonesty conviction, a high school diploma or GED, and a valid driver's license. Sheriffs and deputies serve without court appointment.
Routine process service in Arkansas typically costs between $60 and $150 per serve. Rush service, attempts in rural areas, and skip tracing will cost more. You can compare rates by requesting bids from multiple verified process servers on the Mighty Process Server platform.
Under AR R. Civ. P. 4(i), service must be completed within 120 days after filing the complaint. The court may extend this deadline for good cause. If service is not completed within the deadline, the action may be dismissed without prejudice.
No. Process in Arkansas must be served by a sheriff, deputy, or a person appointed by the court under Administrative Order No. 20 and AR R. Civ. P. 4(c)(2). Individuals without a court appointment cannot legally serve process in Arkansas.
If personal service cannot be completed, Arkansas allows substitute service on a family member 18 or older at the defendant's residence. If the defendant cannot be located after diligent efforts, the court may authorize a warning order — a form of constructive notice by publication — under AR R. Civ. P. 4.
